About our gutter survey in Faringdon
Some gutters are easy to see from the street, but many aren’t. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them, from the ground, from windows, from the roof space and from the roof where it is safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. We survey parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers, and people most frequently book us about blocked outlets and hoppers and joints that drip after rain.
In a smaller place like Faringdon, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Common questions in Faringdon
Is Faringdon in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Is my home in Faringdon listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it is safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so it can be checked before work starts.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe and a drone where applicable.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
There’s no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later, because the walls take the water.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. Around Faringdon, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, particularly where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

What a survey costs
When we price a survey, we consider:
- The size of the roof
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

What happens on the day
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Homes around Faringdon frequently have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. As the seals age, joints can start to drip and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.
Fascias and soffits
Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. We check them along with the gutters.
Gutter surveys around Faringdon
Historic houses like Buscot Park, about 3 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Faringdon goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Take a building like Faringdon Community College: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of All Saints, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
