Frieth homes and their roofs
Historic houses like West Wycombe Park House, about 3.2 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Frieth goes. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Take a building like Frieth Church of England Combined School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St John the Evangelist, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Frieth is about 4 miles north-west of Marlow, in Oxfordshire. Surveys in Frieth work the same way as everywhere we cover: a close look at everything that’s safely in view, photos and a clear written report. Frieth is one of the towns and villages in Oxfordshire where we work. We also survey roofs in Reading.
Gutter surveys in RG9 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Frieth Hill, Ellery Rise and Hayles Field or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter surveys include Little Frieth (1 mile north-west), Lane End (1 mile north-east), Bolter End (1 mile north), Fingest (1 mile north-west) and Cadmore End (2 miles north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Thame (11 miles north-west), Henley-on-Thames (6 miles south-west), Benson (11 miles west), Chinnor (7 miles north), Tilehurst (13 miles south-west) and Wallingford (12 miles west).

How a gutter survey works in Frieth
This survey covers rainwater above ground: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we can’t see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we’ll say so in the report, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. If you’ve noticed gutters that have fallen out of line and blocked outlets and hoppers, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Frieth are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. For a village or hamlet like Frieth, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Advice
Common roof problems in Frieth
Plenty of tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Soffits marked by water
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
If you let a flat or house near Marlow station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

FAQs for Frieth
I let a flat near Marlow station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, that’s a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Will you come out to Frieth?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
How quickly is the report sent?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Why get it checked now?
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without one, it’s guesswork from ground level. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Can I check my roof myself?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Box and secret gutters
Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. We look at the outlets, linings and overflows where safe.
Fascias and soffits
Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. We check them along with the gutters.
