Gutter survey in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
We carry out gutter surveys in Marlow and the rest of Buckinghamshire. We survey on any day of the week.
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Leaks at the gutter joints
How a gutter survey works in Marlow
Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot but plenty of gutters are tucked away. Valley, parapet, box and secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We look at them as far as they can safely be seen using vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe. Many leaks indoors start at a hidden gutter. We survey fascias and soffits, outlets and hoppers and eaves gutters, and people most frequently book us about downpipes that are split or coming away and overflowing valley or parapet gutters.
Most homes in a town like Marlow are houses, so the roof is normally the owner’s to look after. Small faults, such as a cracked ridge, a slipped tile or a blocked gutter, are cheaper to deal with early. The report sets out what needs attention, prioritised by urgency where relevant, whether you live in the house or let it. Photographs show you exactly what was seen, even on parts you can’t reach yourself.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Checking the roof from the ground
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Marlow: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Marlow is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
I let a flat near Marlow station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange it.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

What this survey cannot tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- The inside of buried drains
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Gutter surveys in Marlow: local notes
Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Historic houses such as Harleyford Manor, about 2 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Marlow goes. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Shop and office owners around Eden may find that a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. Anyone responsible for a site like Holy Trinity Church of England (Aided) School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed beforehand. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.
When to book a survey in Marlow
Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. Added roof area from an extension can load an older gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
The streets around a church such as Congregational Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- How soon the report will arrive
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a visit in Marlow, we need access to the loft, any rooms with leaks or stains, and the outside of the building. If there is a side gate or a rear garden, let us know how to reach it. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Booking a survey
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Related advice
Before and after the survey
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Check for spilling water in a downpour
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file to help plan maintenance. The photographs help when you explain the work to others.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more frequently near trees. The best time is normally after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.
