How a storm damage roof report works in Farmoor

Most policies do not cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. We’re frequently asked to look into roofs hit by falling trees and water coming in after the storm, across chimney stacks, flat roofs and slate and tile slopes.

Being in a small place like Farmoor makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

  • A price for the repairs
  • Areas we cannot see safely

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Farmoor

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. Historic houses like Appleton Manor, about 3.5 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Farmoor goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you let a flat or house near Oxford station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you look after a building like Bartholomew School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

Farmoor is about 5 miles west of Oxford, in Oxfordshire. Whether the building in Farmoor is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our area takes in places right across Oxfordshire.

Useful tips for Farmoor property owners

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Farmoor

Will you come out to Farmoor?

Yes, Farmoor is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Farmoor?

Yes, Farmoor is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. If it’s safe, take photos before it goes on. We can record the damage in our report.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report doesn’t include repair costs.

Common roof problems in Farmoor

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, with photographs.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Damaged flat roof membrane
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Damaged ridges and hips

Take an older house close to St Mary's Church: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

What’s in a roof survey

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Somewhere like Farmoor needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Check we can get to the back of the property

Getting a price

Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.
