FAQs for Harwell

Is Harwell within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you cover Harwell?

Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Harwell is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. If you are still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Harwell

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey slate and tile slopes, gutters and fascias and flashings, and people most often book us about broken or displaced guttering and roofs hit by falling trees.

Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Harwell can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it isn’t always obvious where it starts. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What we do, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a smaller place like Harwell, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

Wind, rain and roofs in Harwell

Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.

Landlords with a home close to Didcot Parkway station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Matthew, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Useful tips for Harwell property owners

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can

Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. You’ll have your own independent record to refer to.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

Common roof problems in Harwell

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, backed up with photos.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Damaged gutters and fascias

Anyone responsible for a site like Harwell Primary School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

What a good roof survey covers

Why get it checked now?

Many policies expect damage to be reported promptly. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. An independent report can follow. With lower homes, common in places like Harwell, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

What you can safely check yourself

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
