Storm Damage Roof Report in Wantage
Independent storm damage roof reports in Wantage. We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
- Gutters pulled loose in the wind
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaving storm damage can let water into the loft space and rooms below. Further water damage can blur what the storm actually did. A roofer should deal with emergency protection quickly. In a family home in Wantage, a small roof fault lets water into places you can’t see, such as the loft insulation, the top of a wall or the roof timbers. By the time a stain appears on a ceiling, there is more to put right.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

About our storm damage roof report in Wantage
Our storm damage report starts from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flat roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are holes or cracks caused by debris and slates and tiles blown off the roof.
Around a town like Wantage, leaks come from older and newer roofs alike. On older roofs it’s often slates, mortar and lead that has split or lifted; later homes can leak at valleys, verges and flat roofs over extensions. Knowing the cause tells you what to do next. It also tells you whether the problem is old wear or something more recent.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

The survey, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. A typical visit in Wantage begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. Rear gardens and side paths often give the best view of extensions and back slopes. Then, if it can be reached safely, we look in the loft.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before we arrive
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Leaks and storm damage in Wantage
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and St Paul: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. Living close to Betjeman Millennium Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If you look after a building such as St Mary's School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Flat roof coverings
Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. We record what we find.
Lead flashings
Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. We record what looks recent and what looks older.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
- Negotiating a claim settlement
- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Gutters and fascias
- Flashings
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flat roofs
- Ridges and hips
- Chimney stacks
FAQs for Wantage
What do I need to do before a survey in Wantage?
Very little. Unlock side gates, keep pets in another room and dig out any invoices from past roof work, and the visit in Wantage can get straight on.
Is my home in Wantage listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
What do I do if water is coming in?
Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. Take photos from the ground first if it is safe. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Wear and tear is not typically covered. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. Your insurer decides the claim.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Wantage
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.
Checking the roof from the ground
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
