About our roof survey in Wantage
We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where conditions allow. Premium adds thermal imaging, plus a drone inspection where applicable, which helps with tall or steep roofs. All we need from you is access to the property and the loft. Everything we see is photographed for the report. If you are worried about condensation or damp timbers in the loft and cracked mortar along the ridge, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, clay and concrete tiles and natural slate alike.
Wantage mixes older houses, often slate or clay tiled, with newer estates, many of them with concrete tiles. Chimneys on older houses may be redundant, capped or leaning, and their lead flashings still need to be sound. Later houses have their own typical faults, from loose ridge tiles to blocked gutters.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What happens if roof problems are left?
By the time water marks a ceiling, it is often been getting in for a while. Damp spreads through insulation and timber before anything shows below. A survey can pick up the early signs from the loft. Roof faults found early can be planned for, while one found after water comes through typically has to be dealt with in a hurry, in Wantage as anywhere.

Local roofs in Wantage
Older buildings in west Oxfordshire frequently have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you live near a park like Betjeman Millennium Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Mary's School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. The streets around a church such as Church of St Peter and St Paul are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Before and after the survey
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Photograph stains when they appear
- Check the roof from ground level after storms
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
- Include dormers, porches and garages when booking
The recommendations are prioritised by urgency where relevant. Some faults need dealing with soon, while others can wait for planned work. It makes the next steps much clearer.
Have gutters and valleys cleared regularly, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.
Questions from Wantage
Do you carry out roof surveys in Wantage?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How should I get ready for a visit in Wantage?
Clear the way to the loft hatch if there is one, and tell us about any leaks, stains or past repairs. Let us know about parking and access in Wantage too.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. We report on the roof’s condition, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and does not include calculations.
How soon is the report ready?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. We send it by email.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
How the survey works
There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a visit in Wantage, we need access to the loft, any rooms with leaks or stains, and the outside of the building. Mention gates, side passages and anything at the back. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
- On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Tell us about parking before the day

Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
Each chimney’s pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings are looked at. Leaning stacks and loose pots are recorded.
Lead flashings and valleys
Lead-lined valleys and gutters are common on older homes. Cracks in a lead valley can send water into the roof.
