What we need to know

These details help when you get in touch:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £150, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Storm damage roof report in John's Cross

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We survey ridges and hips, flashings and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and gutters pulled loose in the wind.

Being in a small place like John's Cross makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It’s useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. After that, we check everything we can see safely. The survey usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere like John's Cross needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

On flat roofs, storms can lift edges and tear membranes. Damage is photographed and described.

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. We photograph and describe each one.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in John's Cross

Do you cover smaller places like John's Cross?

Yes. John's Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Do you cover John's Cross?

We do. The survey and report are the same in John's Cross as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it is safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, though we cannot predict the outcome.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

What does a storm damage report cost?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs are not part of the report.

Useful tips for John's Cross property owners

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs

Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Why it’s worth a survey now in John's Cross

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, alongside any photos you took yourself. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

John's Cross roofs and the weather

Historic houses like Durhamford Manor, about 2.1 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around John's Cross goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.

For landlords with property near Robertsbridge station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of All Saints, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Vinehall School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.
