Storm damage roof reports for St Leonards homes and businesses

Do you need a storm damage roof report in St Leonards?

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, backed up with photos.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Leonard's Church of England Primary Academy, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • What happens after the report arrives

What a good roof survey covers

Storm damage roof report in St Leonards

Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We’re often asked to look into flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and stains appearing after strong winds, across ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs.

Strong winds lift loose tiles, slates and ridge pieces in towns like St Leonards as anywhere. What counts as a storm depends on your policy; many use gusts of around 55 mph. A report setting out the damage, with photographs, helps you explain what you’ve found. Policies normally exclude wear and tear, which is why the age of the damage matters.

The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Practical tips

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can frequently spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in St Leonards

St Leonards lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St John the Evangelist's Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. For hotels and guest houses around St Leonards, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest.

St Leonards: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in St Leonards is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is St Leonards in the area you cover?

Yes, St Leonards is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Emergency cover over a damaged roof should be arranged with a roofer. If it is safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

How many surveys have you done?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.

How do I book a survey in St Leonards?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. We survey seven days a week.

How long is the visit?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. The report is sent afterwards by email.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

What this survey can’t tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What we check

  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Most visits in a town like St Leonards start at the front of the house and work round to the back. The back garden is often where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen, so unlocked gates help. The loft comes next, where there is safe access.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
