About our storm damage roof report in Riseley
Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Your policy document sets out its own definition. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. The claim decision rests with your insurer. We’re often asked to look into cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and loose or torn flashings, on chimney stacks, flat roofs and ridges and hips.
Roofs in small places like Riseley often stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. For a village or hamlet like Riseley, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Leave a clear route to the loft

How many surveys have you done?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.

What does a storm damage report cost?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It does not include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
What we look for on each type of roof
Lead flashings
Wind can peel back flashings at abutments and stacks. We record which are loose or damaged.
Flat roof coverings
Debris blown onto a flat roof can puncture the covering or block outlets. Any damage is recorded with photos.
Leaks and storm damage in Riseley
With Stratfield Saye House about 1.7 miles south-west, Riseley sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you let a flat or house near Mortimer station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you live near a park like Wellington Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:
- Negotiating a claim settlement
- A decision on your insurance claim
- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Riseley
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it’s better to know. We record storm damage and older defects, so there are no surprises later. Older and listed buildings around Riseley may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.

Checking the roof from the ground
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.
