How a storm damage roof report works in West Berkshire
High winds typically affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. Typical surveys look at cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and slates and tiles blown off the roof, across chimney stacks, gutters and fascias and slate and tile slopes.
It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

You’ll also find The Diamond Tap (within half a mile north-east), St Nicolas C.E. Junior School (under half a mile south) and St Bartholomew's School (0.6 miles south-west). Leaks and storm damage across West Berkshire
In West Berkshire, our storm damage roof reports work takes in houses, flats and commercial buildings, in Newbury, Thatcham and Burghfield Common and well beyond. You get a written record with photographs.
Several airports in London and South East England have flight restriction zones around them, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any drone flight in West Berkshire. Flights that need permission only go ahead once it is given.
Newbury: Shaw House, about 1 mile north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Newbury. Leaks in period homes nearby often come from lead work and valleys that have been patched before. If you look after a building like St Nicolas C.E. Junior School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
What you can safely check yourself
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in.
What this survey can’t tell you
Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- How your policy defines a storm
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
- A price for the repairs
Why roofs fail
Flat roofs can be damaged too. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Damaged gutters and fascias
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Water coming in after the storm
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
What affects the price in West Berkshire
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
What to let us know when you contact us
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- The address and postcode of the property
- When you need the report by
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Why act early?
Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. Our report can then add a clear record.
Questions to ask before you book

West Berkshire: your questions answered
Is West Berkshire in your area?
Yes. We cover West Berkshire. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How much is a storm damage roof report?
Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report doesn’t include repair costs.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when you book.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.
Can I challenge a declined storm claim?
The first step is a complaint to your insurer. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, though we can’t predict the outcome.
