About our storm damage roof report in Inkpen
Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey chimney stacks, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias, and people most frequently book us about ridge tiles that have come loose and damaged gutters and fascias.
Somewhere as small as Inkpen, older roofs have frequently been repaired many times. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it’s worth finding the cause soon.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

What you can safely check yourself
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The survey, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Inkpen often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
Book a survey
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Useful tips for Inkpen property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Do not go onto the roof to take pictures
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. If that doesn’t resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
Leaks and storm damage in Inkpen
The wider area around Inkpen has a long history of building, with Stargroves about 3.2 miles south-east. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Anyone responsible for a site like Inkpen Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. Take an older house close to Church of St Michael: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. Landlords with a home close to Kintbury station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away.

Common questions in Inkpen
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Inkpen?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Will you come out to Inkpen?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We are not loss adjusters and do not act for you with the insurer. We provide an independent record of the roof, which you can pass to your insurer.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will explain what’s needed.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
