Roof survey in RG19: how it works
The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it is relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. Common reasons to book are slates or tiles that have slipped or broken and water stains on rafters and ceiling joists, on clay and concrete tiles, natural slate and the roof space.
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building.
- You pick the package that suits your roof.
- We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
What you will pay
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

The nearest railway station is Thatcham station, roughly 0.9 miles south-east of the centre. Homes and roofs across RG19
From Newbury, Thatcham and Whitley to smaller places, people across RG19 use a roof survey to plan ahead. A report helps you sort small faults before they let water in.
Even in the South East, autumn and winter storms find any loose slate, tile or ridge. Ridges, verges and flashings in RG19 are where it typically shows.
Thatcham: Take an older house close to United Reformed Church: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Thatcham station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
Why get it checked now?
Leaks rarely show up straight away. Damp spreads through insulation and timber before anything shows below. A survey can pick up the early signs from the loft.
Before booking any surveyor
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What they will not be able to tell you
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts with the stack outside. We look for the likely route in.
Natural slate
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have slate roofs. Widespread slipping normally points to corroded nails, and we say how widespread it looks.
What this survey cannot tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
Common roof problems in RG19
Every roof takes years of rain, wind, sun and frost. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and rain finds any gap it can. What starts as one slipped slate can become a leak.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
- Standing water on a flat roof
Landlord and commercial surveys in RG19
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.
Common questions in RG19
What does a roof survey include?
Every part of the roof we can safely see: coverings, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and the loft. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check, and Premium adds thermal imaging and a drone where it applies.
Will the report say how many years my roof has left?
Not as an exact number, because so much depends on the fixings, underlay and upkeep. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.
How experienced are you?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Do you carry out asbestos surveys?
No. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos. Our report notes any materials that might, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.
Is RG19 in your area?
Yes. RG19 is part of the area we cover.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we will explain what’s needed.
