Need a storm damage roof report in Shortgate?

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Shortgate

When you claim, your insurer may ask for evidence of the damage and its cause. An independent report gives you a clear record to send. The decision still rests with the insurer.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof

If you own a rental within reach of Uckfield station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price

What a good roof survey covers

About our storm damage roof report in Shortgate

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you’re worried about ridge tiles that have come loose and damage from fallen branches or debris, we can find out what’s behind it.

Many homes in small places like Shortgate face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roof coverings

Wind can lift the edges of flat roof coverings or tear them. We record any damage and where it is.

Slate roofs

After strong winds, we frequently see cracked and slipped slates. We photograph and describe each one.

What we can’t see

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • A price for the repairs
  • Areas we cannot see safely

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

We cannot say whether a claim will be paid. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take an hour or two for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Shortgate can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Shortgate

With Glyndebourne about 3.5 miles south-west, Shortgate sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below.
