Storm damage roof reports in Whitesmith

How a storm damage roof report works in Whitesmith

Our storm damage report starts from £150. It is a written report with photos, sent by email. It isn’t a repair quote and doesn’t include repair costs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs and slate and tile slopes, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are new damp or leaks inside and lead lifted at abutments.

For a small place like Whitesmith, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned in advance. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Whitesmith questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Whitesmith?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is Whitesmith in the area you cover?

Yes, Whitesmith is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and the South East. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

How experienced are you?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

Do you look in the roof space?

Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

Before and after the survey

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • The size of the roof
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Booking your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • The property’s address and postcode

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Estimates of repair costs
  • Areas we can’t see safely

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips

Should I look at the roof myself first?

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Wind, rain and roofs in Whitesmith

In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. About 3.5 miles south-east lies Michelham Priory, a reminder of how long the area around Whitesmith has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

If you look after a building such as Chiddingly Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. Landlords with a home close to Berwick (Sussex) station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Whitesmith is about 5 miles north-west of Hailsham, in East Sussex. We visit Whitesmith as part of our work across East Sussex, for homes and businesses alike. We cover towns and villages across East Sussex. We also survey roofs in Brighton.

All of BN8 is within our area for storm damage roof reports, from the main roads to the quietest streets. We offer storm damage roof reports to properties on Whitesmith Lane and Whitesmith and the roads around them. If you’re just outside Whitesmith, we cover Chiddingly (1 mile east), East Hoathly (1 mile north), Halland (2 miles north-west), Shortgate (2 miles west) and Blackboys (4 miles north). Further out, we also cover Eastbourne (10 miles south-east), Bexhill-on-Sea (13 miles east), Seaford (9 miles south), Lewes (8 miles west), Hailsham (5 miles south-east) and Crowborough (10 miles north).

Around Whitesmith

Whitesmith’s nearest station is Berwick (Sussex) station, roughly 4.5 miles south. A little further out are Hellingly Hospital Railway (4 miles east) and Tickerage Castle (4.6 miles north). The countryside around Whitesmith includes Selwyns Wood.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Whitesmith

Landlords and building managers often need a written record after a storm. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.

We’re frequently asked to look at:

  • Damaged pots on the stack
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Damage from fallen branches or debris

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near The Parish Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey

What a good roof survey covers

What we do, step by step

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. For a village or hamlet like Whitesmith, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

How to prepare
