How a storm damage roof report works in Stow Maries
High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We survey chimney stacks, flashings and gutters and fascias, and people most often book us about loose or torn flashings and slipped or missing slates or tiles.
For a small place like Stow Maries, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What affects the price in Stow Maries
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.
Helping us price your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
Once you know what you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Roof by roof
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.
Lead flashings
Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. Loose or damaged flashings are photographed and noted.
Questions from Stow Maries
Is my home in Stow Maries listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is Stow Maries within the area you cover?
Yes, Stow Maries is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Are you loss adjusters?
No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
How long does the survey take?
It normally takes an hour or two at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. You’ll then get the report by email.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
How do I book a survey in Stow Maries?
To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Leaks and storm damage in Stow Maries
Stow Maries is within about 5 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings. In Essex, older buildings are frequently clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
If you look after a building such as Cold Norton Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you let a flat or house near North Fambridge station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Mary, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
What happens on the day
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Somewhere like Stow Maries needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Before the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
