How a storm damage roof report works in Telscombe Cliffs

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. If you’ve noticed lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles and loose or broken chimney pots and cowls, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on gutters and fascias, ridges and hips and slate and tile slopes alike.

Houses in smaller places like Telscombe Cliffs can stand more in the open, where driving rain gets into any gap at a ridge, verge or flashing. If a leak shows only when the wind is in a certain direction, that is a useful clue. Tell us when it happens when you contact us. Gutters and downpipes on the exposed side are worth a look as well.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

Wind, rain and roofs in Telscombe Cliffs

Telscombe Cliffs is within about 1 mile of the coast, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording, and many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, though it varies. The wider area around Telscombe Cliffs has a long history of building, with Monk's House about 3 miles north-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Landlords with a home close to Newhaven Town station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Anyone responsible for a site like Telscombe Cliffs Community Primary School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you live in an older home near Ascension Church, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Telscombe Cliffs is about 3 miles west of Newhaven, in East Sussex. We survey roofs in Telscombe Cliffs as part of our work across London and South East England. Our East Sussex coverage includes Telscombe Cliffs. Brighton is in our area too.

Surveys in BN10 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include Park Avenue, Ambleside Avenue and Park View Rise, all of which we cover. We also work in nearby towns like Eastbourne (13 miles east), Seaford (5 miles east), Lewes (5 miles north), Hailsham (12 miles east), Uckfield (13 miles north-east) and Newhaven (3 miles east).

Around Telscombe Cliffs

Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Peacehaven Community School and Smugglers Rest pub, among other places. The nearest railway station is Newhaven Town station, roughly 2.9 miles east. A little further out are Planet Earth Museum (2.8 miles east) and Chailey Heritage Marine Hospital (3.7 miles east). Not far away are Itford Hill and Beacon Hill Local Nature Reserve.

What this survey cannot tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes

Why get it checked now?

Damage left open lets in more rain. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. In an older home around Telscombe Cliffs, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridge and hip tiles

Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.

Telscombe Cliffs: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Telscombe Cliffs?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you come out to Telscombe Cliffs?

Yes, Telscombe Cliffs is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Complain to your insurer first. If you are still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, but we can’t say how it will turn out.

Do you look in the roof space?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

We can’t say whether a claim will be paid. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

What happens on the day

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Parking around Telscombe Cliffs is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Before the survey

  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
