Storm damage roof reports in Upton

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Upton

Historic houses such as Windsor Castle, about 1.5 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Upton goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you let a flat or house near Slough station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. For hotels and guest houses around Upton, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest. If you live near a park such as Herschel Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Storm damage roof report in Upton: what you get

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. Our report records both: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We survey gutters and fascias, ridges and hips and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are torn or lifted flat roof coverings and slates and tiles blown off the roof.

Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Upton can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it is not always obvious where it starts. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Why it is worth a survey now in Upton

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. Our report can then add a clear record. In a smaller place like Upton, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing doesn’t stay loose for long. Wind gets under it and lifts more, and water follows.

Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the exact price before booking.

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridge and hip tiles

Worn mortar under ridge tiles can let them lift in a storm. We note whether the mortar looks recently broken or long worn.

Clay and concrete tiles

Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. Each gap is recorded with a photo.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

What we do, step by step

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes about 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. A visit to Upton is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Upton questions

Is Upton in the area you cover?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Upton is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details.

Will you come out to Upton?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Upton

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Letting agents and landlords in Upton book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos.

What you can safely check yourself

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
