Storm damage roof reports for Walter's Green homes and businesses

How it works

The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Walter's Green needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Before we arrive

  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Storm damage roof report in Walter's Green: what you get

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey chimney stacks, flashings and slate and tile slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

Roofs in small places like Walter's Green often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Why act early in Walter's Green

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. Older cottages and farmhouses around Walter's Green can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Walter's Green?

Gusts work at anything on a roof that is loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. Most people book a report soon after a storm, when they’ve seen damage or water has come in.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose

Landlords with a home close to Ashurst Kent station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away.

What to check before booking

  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Walter's Green?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when booking.

Storm damage roof reports in Walter's Green: local notes

About 2.1 miles north-east lies Penshurst Place, a reminder of how long the area around Walter's Green has been built on. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. Take a building like Fordcombe Church of England Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.
