Washington Storm Damage Roof Report
An independent record of roof damage after a storm for Washington and the rest of West Sussex. We survey on any day of the week.
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
- Broken or displaced guttering
- Loose or torn flashings
What happens on the day
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about one to two hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older roofs in small places like Washington can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photos.
Getting ready for the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Advice
Storm damage roof report in Washington: what you get
Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We survey flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and flashings, and the problems we are asked to look at most are slates and tiles blown off the roof and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind.
Many homes in small places like Washington face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Washington questions
Do you cover smaller places like Washington?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Washington?
Yes, Washington is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we can’t say how it will turn out.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.
Why get it checked now?
If the damage is partly wear and tear, it’s better to know. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Washington, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both inc. VAT. You will know the price for the job before booking.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Washington
With Parham House about 3.9 miles west, Washington sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you look after a building such as St Mary's CofE Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Mary: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
Washington is about 6 miles north of Worthing, in West Sussex. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Washington can all book storm damage roof reports. Across West Sussex, we cover Washington. Our Brighton page covers surveys nearby.
We survey roofs across RH20 for storm damage roof reports and the streets around it. If you need a storm damage roof report at a property on London Road, The Street and Chanctonbury Close or anywhere close by, we can help. We also cover Rock (1 mile north), Sullington (1 mile west), Heath Common (2 miles north-west), Storrington (2 miles north-west) and Warminghurst (2 miles north). We also work in nearby towns like Horsham (12 miles north), Worthing (6 miles south), Bognor Regis (15 miles south-west), Haywards Heath (15 miles north-east), Burgess Hill (13 miles east) and Littlehampton (8 miles south-west).
What’s near Washington
Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Rydon Community College, Windlesham House School and The Frankland Arms Public House. Other landmarks nearby include The Storrington And District Museum (2 miles north-west). The countryside around Washington includes Chanctonbury Hill.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.
Prices for storm damage roof reports in Washington
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Height and safe access
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.
What we need to know
Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
