Storm Damage Roof Report across West Sussex

Storm damage roof reports across West Sussex: what to expect

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Check your own policy wording. We do not decide whether a storm met that test. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We survey chimney stacks, flashings and ridges and hips, and the problems we are asked to look at most are water coming in after the storm and damaged pots on the stack.

You do not need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

What you’ll pay

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

Around Crawley

Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Friary Church of St Francis and St Anthony, St Wilfrid's Catholic School and Tilgate Park and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include The George Hotel (under half a mile north), Three Bridges Junior School (within half a mile south-east) and St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School (less than half a mile south-east). There’s a railway station in Crawley itself: Crawley station. A little further out are Crawley Hospital (0.5 miles north-west) and County Mall (less than half a mile north-east). Not far away are Tilgate Lake.

Leaks and storm damage across West Sussex

In West Sussex, our storm damage roof reports work takes in houses, flats and commercial buildings, from Crawley, Horsham and Worthing to the quieter places in between. Each report records what was seen, with photos.

Several airports in London and South East England have flight restriction zones around them, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any drone flight in West Sussex. Where permission is needed, the flight waits for it. Coastal towns and villages in West Sussex see more salt and wind than places inland. Ridges and verges facing the sea are worth checking after every big storm.

Crawley: For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Three Bridges Junior School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. If you live in an older home near Friary Church of St Francis and St Anthony, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Why act early?

Once the storm has passed, damage that looked minor can let water in for months. Acting quickly typically means less damage overall.

Tips that help

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear

If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

Surveys for landlords and agents in West Sussex

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

Why roofs fail

Roofs that were already worn are more likely to suffer in a storm. Nail fatigue, eroded ridge mortar and tired flashings can all fail in high winds. We record recent damage alongside older defects.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings

Different roofs, different checks

Clay and concrete tiles

A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. We photograph each gap.

Slate roofs

Slates can slip or blow off in a storm, especially where the nails have corroded. We record which slates have moved and any signs of older nail fatigue.

West Sussex: your questions answered

How do I book a survey in West Sussex?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It does not include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.

What if the roof was already worn?

Most policies do not cover wear and tear. We note both storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.

How long does the survey take?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The report follows by email.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Please do not climb onto the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
