Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Check how your policy defines a storm

If anything in the report is not clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

How a storm damage roof report works in Halnaker

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We give an honest view of what we see. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. We survey gutters and fascias, flashings and ridges and hips, and people most often book us about damaged pots on the stack and lead lifted at abutments.

Many homes in small places like Halnaker face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Halnaker

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed beforehand. We survey seven days a week, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

Why it is worth a survey now in Halnaker

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. An independent report can follow. In a place like Halnaker, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Checking the roof from the ground

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

When you need someone else

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • A price for the repairs
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Halnaker: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Halnaker is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Halnaker within the area you cover?

Yes. Halnaker is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

Only your insurer can decide that. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. The written report follows by email.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.

Will you check the loft?

Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Halnaker?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know the address and what you want to find out. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where applicable. The survey typically takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a hamlet or village like Halnaker, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there is access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Booking a survey

Booking is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and give us some details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

Leaks and storm damage in Halnaker

About 1.4 miles west lies Goodwood House, a reminder of how long the area around Halnaker has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

If you look after a building such as Boxgrove CofE Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you let a flat or house near Chichester station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Take an older house close to The Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaize: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
