How a drone roof survey works in Halnaker

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a report with photographs. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We survey fragile roofs, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most often book us about cracked mortar along the ridge and standing water on a flat roof.

Villages like Halnaker often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Useful tips for Halnaker property owners

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Let us know the exact address when you book

Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Halnaker: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Halnaker?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover smaller places like Halnaker?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when you book.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

Central London has restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, where flights need permission from NATS. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

How do I book a survey in Halnaker?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we’ll point you to the right survey. Surveys run on any day of the week.

Flying and imaging in Halnaker

Halnaker is about 3 miles from Goodwood Aerodrome, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Goodwood House lies about 1.4 miles west, so building around Halnaker goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Take an older house close to The Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaize: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Halnaker is about 3 miles north-east of Chichester, in West Sussex. In Halnaker, as across West Sussex, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across West Sussex. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

We work across PO18 for drone roof surveys and the streets around it. We offer drone roof surveys to properties on The Street, Stame Road and Oakford Park and the roads around them. If you’re just outside Halnaker, we cover Boxgrove (1 mile south), Waterbeach (1 mile west), Tangmere (1 mile south), Strettington (1 mile south-west) and Westerton (1 mile west). Further out, we also cover Worthing (14 miles east), Bognor Regis (5 miles south), Chichester (3 miles south-west), Selsey (10 miles south), Littlehampton (9 miles south-east) and Emsworth (10 miles west).

What we’re asked to look at in Halnaker

Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds

Anyone responsible for a site like Boxgrove CofE Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What to check before booking

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What to expect from a roof survey

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What happens on the day

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere as small as Halnaker, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets in another room
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Booking a survey
