How a drone roof survey works in Worthing

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and storm damage on steep or tall roofs.

In a place like Worthing, offices, shops, schools and blocks of flats frequently have big flat roofs. Water trapped under a flat covering can spread well beyond where it got in. Aerial photos show the whole roof at once, and anything a thermal image suggests is checked with moisture readings. Plant, rooflights and fragile panels can make a large roof unsafe to walk on.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

What happens on the day

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Where a building in Worthing has a manager or access rules, those are sorted out before the day. At home, it helps to clear a route to the loft and point out any stains or leaks. The written report follows, with photographs.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Advice

Why act early in Worthing

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. Whatever the age of a roof in Worthing, small defects only grow if they’re left. What starts as a cracked flashing or a blocked outlet becomes wet timber and stained ceilings in time.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Flying and imaging in Worthing

Worthing lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Worthing, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.

For hotels and guest houses around Worthing, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Andrew's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.

Common questions in Worthing

Is my home in Worthing listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Are there drone restrictions around Worthing?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

How quickly is the report sent?

Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will explain what’s needed.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Worthing

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Common roof problems in Worthing

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs

Anyone responsible for a site like Durrington High School will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

Before booking anyone

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Will the report include photos?
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
