About our drone roof survey in Selsey

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you’re worried about plant growth and moss on the roof and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In older houses around Selsey, loft insulation can be thin, patchy or missing in places. A thermal camera shows those cold and warm patches, and some of them can point to moisture. It shows temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Selsey?

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Wind damage high on the roof

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Seal Primary Academy, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Before booking anyone

  • When you will get the report
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What exactly goes into their report

Questions from Selsey

Do you carry out roof surveys in Selsey?

Yes, Selsey is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Selsey?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Will you check the loft?

If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.

What happens after the survey?

The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

What we do, step by step

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In Selsey, parking is rarely complicated, though it’s useful to know about driveways or restrictions. We check the roof from ground level and from windows, then from the loft where there’s safe access.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Advice

What this survey can’t tell you

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Selsey roofs

Selsey is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Peter's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Why act early in Selsey

A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. Around Selsey, water from a roof defect often goes unseen for a while, soaking loft insulation, wall tops and timbers. By the time it shows inside, the job has grown.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

DIY checks: what’s safe

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
