Drone roof survey in Maudlin

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We are frequently asked to look into cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Some older homes in villages like Maudlin are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Drone roof surveys in Maudlin: local notes

Maudlin lies within about 5 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Goodwood Aerodrome is about 1 mile away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near The Parish Church of St Peter, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Goodwood House lies about 1.5 miles north, so building around Maudlin goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. Anyone responsible for a site like The March CofE Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Maudlin is about 2 miles north-east of Chichester, in West Sussex. We survey roofs in Maudlin and the rest of West Sussex. Our area takes in places right across West Sussex, large and small. There is also a page for Portsmouth.

We cover every part of PO18 for drone roof surveys. You’ll find streets such as Augustus Way, Vespasian Close and Stane Street, all of which we cover. We also cover Westhampnett (1 mile west), Shopwyke (1 mile south), Westerton (1 mile north), Strettington (1 mile north-east) and Waterbeach (1 mile north). Larger places within reach include Worthing (15 miles east), Bognor Regis (5 miles south-east), Selsey (8 miles south), Littlehampton (10 miles east), Emsworth (8 miles west) and Rustington (11 miles east).

What a drone roof survey does not cover

A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What this survey covers

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Maudlin questions

Is drone flying allowed in Maudlin?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Goodwood Aerodrome is about 1 mile away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

How do I find out if my home in Maudlin is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. In strong wind or heavy rain, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, and we’d agree another day.

What will the report tell me?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.

How experienced are you?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.

Tips from our surveys

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.

Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Checking the roof from ground level

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Around Maudlin, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Why get it checked now?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Finding them now means less to put right, whatever height the roof is. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Maudlin, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Roof area
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Which survey package you book

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

We will usually ask about:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. To book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
