About our storm damage roof report in Chichester
After a storm, it’s useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We’re not loss adjusters and cannot tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. Typical surveys look at damaged flat roof membrane and damage from fallen branches or debris, across flat roofs, ridges and hips and slate and tile slopes.
Extensions, dormers and conservatories are common on houses in towns like Chichester, and the joint between new and old is a classic place for water to get in. Flashings, upstands and the edges of flat roofs are checked alongside the main roof, inside and out. Water can run along the top of a wall or a joist before it shows, so the stain isn’t always the place to look.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Chichester: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Chichester is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Chichester in the area you cover?
Yes, Chichester is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Chichester as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
How should I record storm damage myself?
Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Can I challenge a declined storm claim?
Raise it with your insurer first. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Why get it checked now?
A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. Once water reaches the loft insulation in a home in Chichester, it loses much of its value and is slow to dry. That adds to the bill long before the leak is obvious.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.
Why us?
- A written report with photos
- Thermal imaging and drones used where they help

Storm damage roof reports around Chichester
The coast is about 5 miles or less from Chichester. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording, and many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, though it varies. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Chichester means lost rooms as well as repairs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Lancastrian Infant School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. Take an older house close to Church of St Paul: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

How we price storm damage roof reports
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
Helping us price your survey
There’s no need for technical words. It’s enough to let us know:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.
When you need someone else
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- A decision on your insurance claim
- A price for the repairs
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.
Roofs we survey in Chichester
- Slate and tile slopes
- Ridges and hips
- Flat roofs
- Flashings
- Gutters and fascias
- Chimney stacks
Roof by roof
Lead flashings
Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.
Chimney stacks
High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. The report notes any damage to the stack.
How it works
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. For a home in Chichester, the main things we need are a way into the loft, a route to the back garden and somewhere to park. Someone needs to let us in, so let us know who that will be.
- You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Before we arrive
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
