Useful tips for Rowhook property owners

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Check the roof from ground level after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

How a storm damage roof report works in Rowhook

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. The report includes photographs of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We survey flat roofs, flashings and ridges and hips, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or torn flashings and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind.

For a small place like Rowhook, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

How the survey works

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Around Rowhook, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Why act early in Rowhook

Damage left open lets in more rain. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. Older cottages and farmhouses around Rowhook can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Wind, rain and roofs in Rowhook

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

Trees in and around Farlington Strood Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. Take a building like Farlington School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. If you let a flat or house near Warnham station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Rowhook is about 4 miles north-west of Horsham, in West Sussex. We carry out storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Rowhook and the surrounding area. Our area takes in places right across West Sussex, large and small. You can also see our page for Crawley.

DIY checks: what’s safe

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

How the survey changes by roof type

Slate roofs

In high winds, slates can slip or go, often where nails have rusted. Our report notes moved slates and any sign of older corrosion.

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • The roof’s overall size
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT.

What to let us know when you contact us

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

We confirm the exact price before booking, so you know where you stand. Prices start from £150, including VAT. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
