About our storm damage roof report in Crosspost
What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Check your own policy wording. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. The report includes photographs of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. The claim decision rests with your insurer. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs and ridges and hips, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are holes or cracks caused by debris and water coming in after the storm.
In a village or hamlet like Crosspost, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, and the difference matters, especially to an insurer. We check whatever is safely visible and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

- A price for the repairs
- A decision on your insurance claim

Questions from Crosspost
Do you cover smaller places like Crosspost?
Yes. Crosspost is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Is my home in Crosspost listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Does someone need to be in?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you as you book.
What does a storm damage report cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.
Will you deal with the insurance company for me?
No. We are not loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage for you to send to your insurer.
Before and after the survey
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Photograph the damage safely from below
- Take photos of stains and damp inside
- Read your policy wording on storm damage
The report is emailed to you, and you decide what to send to your insurer. It is your record to use.
A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
Crosspost roofs and the weather
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. The wider area around Crosspost has a long history of building, with Ockenden Manor about 3.1 miles north-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Take a building like Bolney CofE Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. Landlords with a home close to Wivelsfield station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.
Crosspost is about 4 miles north-west of Burgess Hill, in West Sussex. We survey roofs in Crosspost and the rest of West Sussex, as part of our work across London and the South East. Our area takes in places right across West Sussex. Crawley is in our area too.

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel

What we do, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. For a village or hamlet like Crosspost, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.
Getting ready for the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Keep pets in another room
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Common roof problems in Crosspost
When you claim, your insurer may ask for evidence of the damage and its cause. A written report with photos gives you something clear to pass on. The decision still rests with the insurer.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Water coming in after the storm
- Flat roof edges peeled back
- Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
- Lead lifted at abutments
If you live in an older home near St Mary Magdalene's Church, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
