About our storm damage roof report in Henfield
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you’re worried about flat roof edges peeled back and new damp or leaks inside, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a smaller place like Henfield, some roofs face open ground, so wind and driving rain find any weakness in ridges, verges and flashings. If a leak shows only when the wind is in a certain direction, that is a useful clue. It is useful to know when and where the water appears. The gutters on the most exposed side can overflow too.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Leaks and storm damage in Henfield
There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
Take a building like St Peter's CofE Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.
Henfield is about 7 miles north of Shoreham-by-Sea, in West Sussex. We cover Henfield and the rest of West Sussex. Our West Sussex coverage includes Henfield and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Brighton page.
All of BN5 is covered for storm damage roof reports, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Local streets include Upper Station Road, High Street and Lower Station Road, and we cover them all. The survey, step by step
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about one to two hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. For a survey in Henfield, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before the survey
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Henfield questions
How do I find out if my home in Henfield is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Henfield in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Henfield as anywhere else.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.
Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?
The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.
My storm claim was turned down. What now?
Complain to your insurer first. If you are still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, though we can’t predict the outcome.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.
Will you check the loft?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
What this survey cannot tell you
It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:
- Acting for you with the insurer
- Repair costs or quotes for the work
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Gutters and fascias
- Flashings
- Slate and tile slopes
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
- Ridges and hips
Why get it checked now?
The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Later weather and temporary repairs can make it harder to see what happened. Arranging work in a smaller place like Henfield is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.
To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details. The price is agreed before a date is set.
What you get with us
- Package prices that include VAT
- A written report with photos
- We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- An independent look at the roof
See our cost guide or two real surveys.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

How we price storm damage roof reports
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- How big the roof is
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Henfield?
Roofs that were already worn are more likely to suffer in a storm. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.
Problems we come across often include:
- Flat roof edges peeled back
- Damaged pots on the stack
- Slipped or missing slates or tiles
- Ridge tiles that have come loose
For an older house near a landmark such as St Peter's Church, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.
