How a storm damage roof report works in Ashington
Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. If you’ve noticed damage from fallen branches or debris and new damp or leaks inside, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, ridges and hips and flat roofs alike.
For a small place like Ashington, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It is useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

Checking the roof from ground level
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
When to book a survey in Ashington
Storms do not only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
- Loose or torn flashings
- Water coming in after the storm
- Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
The streets around a church such as Ashington Methodist Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.
Questions to ask before booking
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- What experience they bring
- Is VAT included in the price?
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Ashington
Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. Parham House, about 4.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Ashington. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Ashington CofE Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Ashington questions
Do you cover Ashington?
Yes, Ashington is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Is Ashington within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What if the roof was already worn?
Most policies do not cover wear and tear. We note both storm damage and older defects, so it’s clear what we found. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.
How long will you be at the property?
Expect it to take between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The written report follows by email.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the freeholder or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.
What happens on the day
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photographs. As for time on site, it normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older roofs in small places like Ashington can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Keep pets in another room

Advice
Different roofs, different checks
Clay and concrete tiles
Strong gusts can lift and break tiles. The report shows each damaged area.
Slate roofs
Slates frequently outlast the nails that hold them. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.

Why it is worth a survey now in Ashington
Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from the ground if it’s safe. Those photos show the damage as it was. Older and listed buildings around Ashington may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You will know the price for your roof before booking.

What we can’t see
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- A decision on your insurance claim
- Areas we can’t see safely
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
