Storm damage roof report in Charlton: what you get

After a storm, safety comes first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and do not climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey flat roofs, flashings and gutters and fascias, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are stains appearing after strong winds and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind.

Being in a small place like Charlton makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

How the survey works

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes between one and two hours at most homes, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a hamlet or village like Charlton, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Advice

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Take photos from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They can help show the roof was looked after.

Charlton: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Charlton?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Charlton?

Yes, Charlton is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Charlton as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Please do not climb onto the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?

Only your insurer can decide that. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

What a survey costs

To price your survey, we check:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Helping us price your survey

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so phone 07833 053749 or email us with the details.

Charlton roofs and the weather

Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. Historic houses like West Dean House, about 1.7 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Charlton goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

The streets around a church such as The Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

Charlton is about 5 miles north of Chichester, in West Sussex. Whether the building in Charlton is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof. Our West Sussex coverage includes Charlton and the places around it. There’s also a page for Portsmouth.

We work across PO18 for storm damage roof reports and the streets around it. You’ll find streets such as Charlton Road and Knight's Hill. Neighbouring places we cover for storm damage roof reports include Singleton (1 mile west), East Dean (1 mile east), West Dean (2 miles west), Cocking (3 miles north) and Heyshott (3 miles north). We also work in nearby towns such as Bognor Regis (9 miles south), Chichester (5 miles south), Selsey (12 miles south), Littlehampton (11 miles south-east), Emsworth (10 miles south-west) and Rustington (12 miles south-east).

Surveys for landlords and agents in Charlton

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Charlton

Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. An independent report gives you another view of the roof. What happens next is up to the insurer.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose

Take a building like Singleton CofE Primary School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Before booking anyone

  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
