Storm damage roof report in Tortington

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. You can then give it to your insurer with your claim. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We aren’t loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. If you’re worried about loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks, we can find out what’s behind it, on slate and tile slopes, chimney stacks and flashings alike.

Many homes in small places like Tortington face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Leaving storm damage can let water into the loft space and rooms below. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. A roofer should deal with emergency protection quickly. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

How the survey works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes about one to two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a hamlet or village like Tortington, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

What this survey can’t tell you

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • Estimates of repair costs

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Tortington?

Flat roofs can be damaged too. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Damage from fallen branches or debris
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof

Take an older house close to St Mary Magdalene's Church: old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

What to check before booking

  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • What experience they bring
  • Whether VAT is added on top

What a roof survey includes

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • The roof’s overall size

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. We confirm the price for the job before you book.

Getting in touch

Before you get in touch, it’s useful to have:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • The property’s address and postcode

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Wind, rain and roofs in Tortington

Tortington lies within about 3 miles of the sea, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you own a rental within reach of Ford station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Ecclesden Manor lies about 4.7 miles east, so building around Tortington goes back a long way. Leaks in period homes nearby often come from lead work and valleys that have been patched before.

Tortington is about 3 miles north-west of Littlehampton, in West Sussex. We visit Tortington as part of our work across West Sussex. We cover towns and villages across West Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Brighton.

We survey roofs across the BN18 postcode area for storm damage roof reports. If you need a storm damage roof report at a property on Ford Road and Gaugemaster Way or a nearby road, we can survey it. If you’re just outside Tortington, we cover Ford (1 mile south), Lyminster (1 mile east), Arundel (1 mile north-east), Wick (2 miles south-east) and Climping (2 miles south). Within a short drive, we also cover Worthing (8 miles east), Bognor Regis (6 miles south-west), Chichester (9 miles west), Selsey (12 miles south-west), Littlehampton (3 miles south-east) and Shoreham-by-Sea (13 miles east).

Before and after the survey

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that doesn’t resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

After a storm, look at the roof from the street or garden. With binoculars, you can frequently spot problems without climbing. Don’t go up a ladder to look.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Tortington

How do I find out if my home in Tortington is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Tortington, take more of a battering?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

What does a storm damage report cost?
