  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Damage from fallen branches or debris

Storm damage roof reports in Earnley

Before and after the survey

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Photograph damage inside the house too

The report is emailed to you, and you decide what to send to your insurer. It’s your record to use.

A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.

Storm damage roof report in Earnley: what you get

We inspect the roof from wherever it can be seen safely: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there is access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. If part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. You get a photo-illustrated written report to give to your insurer. Common reasons to book are loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and damaged gutters and fascias, across flashings, chimney stacks and flat roofs.

In a village or hamlet like Earnley, older cottages and farmhouses frequently have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • Height and safe access
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Roof area

Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.

Booking your survey

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it helps to mention:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • What made you get in touch
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Storm damage roof reports around Earnley

The coast is about 2 miles or less from Earnley, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Strong wind lifts anything already loose, and driving rain gets in wherever it can, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.

For an older house near a landmark like Earnley Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney. Anyone responsible for a site like East Wittering Community Primary School will know that on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

Earnley is about 3 miles north-west of Selsey, in West Sussex. Surveys in Earnley work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. We cover towns and villages across West Sussex. There is also a page for Portsmouth.

FAQs for Earnley

Do you cover smaller places like Earnley?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Earnley?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, though we can’t predict the outcome.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for those.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How the survey changes by roof type

Slate roofs

After strong winds, we often see cracked and slipped slates. Each area is photographed and described.

Ridge and hip tiles

A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.

What we do, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take an hour or two on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Earnley frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

Related advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book.
