What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • What made you get in touch

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.

Storm damage roof report in Ifold

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. The report includes photographs of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. If you’ve noticed flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and damage from fallen branches or debris, we can find out what’s behind it.

Roofs in small places like Ifold often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

How the survey works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report. On timing, it normally takes about one to two hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a hamlet or village like Ifold, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Advice

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Storm damage roof reports around Ifold

If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St John the Baptist, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Ifold is about 9 miles west of Horsham, in West Sussex. We cover Ifold and the rest of West Sussex, as part of our work across London and South East England. Our West Sussex coverage includes Ifold. There’s also a page for Guildford.

Ifold: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ifold?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Ifold within the area you cover?

Yes, Ifold is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What if the roof was already worn?

Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How experienced are you?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

It varies by policy. Many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but check your own wording.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Ifold

Storms don’t only affect pitched roofs. Coverings can tear or peel back at the edges, and water can pond where outlets are blocked. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind

Take a building like Loxwood Primary School: a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What they will not be able to tell you

Practical tips

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage

If you’re unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
