About our storm damage roof report in Broadbridge

The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We survey flashings, chimney stacks and slate and tile slopes, and people most often book us about cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind and loose or torn flashings.

Many homes in small places like Broadbridge face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Broadbridge

Is the coastal weather around Broadbridge hard on roofs?

Often, yes. Within about 3 miles of the sea, as Broadbridge is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Is Broadbridge within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

How do I book a survey in Broadbridge?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll suggest the right survey. We survey seven days a week.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, and 98% of clients are satisfied.

Are you loss adjusters?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. Our report then records the roof.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.

Broadbridge roofs and the weather

Broadbridge lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Driving rain off the sea can be pushed into gaps that stay dry in calmer weather, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.

If you let a flat or house near Bosham station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Take a building like Bosham Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you live in an older home near The United Reformed Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Broadbridge is about 3 miles west of Chichester, in West Sussex. We survey roofs in Broadbridge and the rest of West Sussex, as part of our work across London and the South East. Broadbridge is one of the places in West Sussex we cover. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

We survey roofs across PO18 for storm damage roof reports. If you need a storm damage roof report at a property on Station Road, Gifford Road and North Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. If you are just outside Broadbridge, we cover Bosham (1 mile south-west), West Ashling (1 mile north), Chidham (1 mile west), East Ashling (2 miles north) and Fishbourne (2 miles east). Further out, we also cover Bognor Regis (8 miles south-east), Chichester (3 miles east), Selsey (8 miles south), Littlehampton (14 miles east), Emsworth (4 miles west) and Rustington (15 miles east).

Checking the roof from ground level

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. Loose flashings are recorded.

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.

What a survey costs

To price your survey, we look at:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Height and safe access
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.

What to tell us when you contact us

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, it helps to mention:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • When you need the report by
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.

Honest limits

We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Estimates of repair costs

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Slate and tile slopes

How it works

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a hamlet or village like Broadbridge, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
