About our storm damage roof report in East Worthing

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Check your own policy wording. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. If you’ve noticed flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and gutters pulled loose in the wind, we can find out what’s behind it.

Older cottages and houses around East Worthing may have roofs with little or no underlay. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there is little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Finding where it gets in, and whether it’s old wear or new damage, decides what comes next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are frequently the first clue.

The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Tips from our surveys

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

When to book a survey in East Worthing

Branches and trees often come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, backed up with photos.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Loose or torn flashings
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Damaged gutters and fascias

If you live in an older home near St George's Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Are they insured for the work?

What a storm damage roof report looks like in East Worthing

The coast is about 1 mile or less from East Worthing, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording, and many treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, though it varies. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

Anyone responsible for a site like Lyndhurst Infant School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. For landlords with property near East Worthing station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in East Worthing

Does being near the coast affect roofs in East Worthing?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

Do you cover smaller places like East Worthing?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

A roofer should handle temporary protection. If it’s safe, take photos before it goes on. Our report then records the roof.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you as you book.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What we look for on each type of roof

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We record what we can see of the fixings.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.

How it works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes between one and two hours for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a smaller place like East Worthing, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
