Thermal Roof Survey in Brownbread Street
Know where you stand with the roof before you spend money on it. We carry out thermal roof surveys in Brownbread Street.
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Cold areas below the roof
About our thermal roof survey in Brownbread Street
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We are frequently asked to look into wet insulation beneath the membrane and ceilings that feel colder in places, across pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Brownbread Street may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Don’t switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
- File the images with your roof records
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
How we price thermal roof surveys
Our packages start from £150, with VAT included. What you pay for your roof depends on:
- Roof area
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- When you need the report by
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
A quick phone call is usually the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Common roof problems in Brownbread Street
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
Look out for signs like these:
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St Peter are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Questions to ask before booking

Airspace, weather and Brownbread Street roofs
Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Why get it checked now?

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Brownbread Street
Do you cover Brownbread Street?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Brownbread Street as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is my home in Brownbread Street listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
The results depend on the weather. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
The camera does not see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
How long does the survey take?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.

What else we do in Brownbread Street
What we do, step by step
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Brownbread Street can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We look at the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
