Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Chappel
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. Common reasons to book are heat escaping through the roof and damp around roof outlets and upstands, on loft conversions, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.
Villages like Chappel often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Chappel
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- The roof’s overall size
- House, block, shop or office
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the price for your roof before you book.
Getting in touch
We’ll typically ask about:
- When you need the report by
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Why get it checked now?
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is frequently to open up the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Flying and imaging in Chappel
In Essex, older buildings are frequently clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, alongside lots of post-war and newer estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
Take a building like Chappel Church of England Controlled Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Barnabas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Chappel is about 5 miles east of Halstead, in Essex. Chappel gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Chappel is one of the places in Essex where we work. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

How the survey changes by roof type
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Thin membranes can show patterns from the layers beneath. Reflections from shiny surfaces can affect readings, which we allow for.
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We look where there is safe access.
What this survey cannot tell you
It is useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- An energy rating for the building
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Insulated roof spaces
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Chappel: your questions answered
Will you come out to Chappel?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is Chappel in the area you cover?
Yes, Chappel is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
What will the report tell me?
Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

What happens on the day
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, it typically takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a small place like Chappel, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
