Cock Street Thermal Roof Survey
We take a careful look at the roof at your property in Cock Street, with photographs and a written report.
- Heat escaping through the roof
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
Thermal roof survey in Cock Street
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. If you’ve noticed damp around chimneys and parapets and damp around roof outlets and upstands, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Cock Street, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Cock Street: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Cock Street is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Do you cover Cock Street?
Yes, Cock Street is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source cannot be confirmed, we will say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. On timing, it usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere as small as Cock Street, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- A formal energy assessment
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Photograph damp patches with the date
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photographs and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof, when the conditions are suitable.

How the survey changes by roof type
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.
What we’re asked to look at in Cock Street
Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
Around Cock Street, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

Airspace, weather and Cock Street roofs
If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Matthew's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
