Thermal roof surveys for Great Hampden homes and businesses

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. We check those patches with moisture readings.

Loft insulation

In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.

Thermal roof survey in Great Hampden

Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. If you are worried about ceilings that feel colder in places and patches of heat loss across the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Some older homes in villages like Great Hampden are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Great Hampden: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Great Hampden is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Great Hampden?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Great Hampden as anywhere else.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Can a thermal camera see water?

The camera doesn’t see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

How do I book a survey in Great Hampden?

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know the address and what you’d like to know. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you as you book.

Drones, thermal imaging and Great Hampden roofs

About 3.8 miles south lies Hughenden Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Great Hampden has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Take an older house close to Church of St Mary Magdalene: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How the survey works

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a small place like Great Hampden, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

How to prepare

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Confirming water without moisture readings

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes

Landlord and commercial surveys in Great Hampden

Letting agents and landlords in Great Hampden book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Before and after the survey

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself

Where a pattern cannot be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
