Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Greensted
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. The Premium Survey brings thermal imaging and a drone inspection where applicable, with a report the same day, which suits a purchase that’s moving quickly.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Stains that keep coming back
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
If you look after a building such as Chipping Ongar Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Before booking anyone
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Are they insured for the work?
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
Thermal roof survey in Greensted
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We survey loft conversions, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs, and people most often book us about heat escaping through the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Greensted may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Honest limits
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations

How the survey works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Older roofs in small places like Greensted can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Different roofs, different checks
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
On larger commercial single-ply roofs, thermal imaging can help target moisture readings. That makes the survey more focused.
GRP fibreglass roofs
GRP surfaces can be shiny, which affects thermal readings. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.
Flying and imaging in Greensted
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. About 3.8 miles south-west lies Hill Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Greensted has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
The streets around a church like Greensted Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
FAQs for Greensted
Do you carry out roof surveys in Greensted?
Yes, Greensted is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Do you cover smaller places like Greensted?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
Why it is worth a survey now in Greensted
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you commit. Older cottages and farmhouses around Greensted can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.
