Greensted Roof Survey
Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Greensted. We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Condensation or damp timbers in the loft
- Valley linings that have cracked or split
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
How the survey works
We’ll ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In a hamlet or village like Greensted, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
- A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it is safe.
- Every part of the roof is checked and photographed.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.

Roof survey in Greensted: what you get
We survey roofs in Greensted and across London and the South East. Visits run seven days a week. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and bring 20+ years’ experience. Each survey ends with a written report, emailed with photographs and recommendations. Whether it is a house, a flat or a commercial building, the process is the same. To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Common reasons to book are cracked mortar along the ridge and lifted, split or missing lead flashings, across clay and concrete tiles, the roof space and lead flashings.
Some older homes in villages like Greensted are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What a roof survey looks like in Greensted
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Historic houses such as Hill Hall, about 3.8 miles south-west, show how far back building around Greensted goes. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up. If you live in an older home near Greensted Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Why get it checked now?
Without a survey, you’re guessing at what the roof needs. You might pay for work that doesn’t fix the real problem, or to a real problem being missed. We tell you what’s really needed. For an older or listed building in a place like Greensted, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What we are asked to look at in Greensted
A chimney stack takes more weather than almost any other part of a roof. Mortar crumbles, the flaunching around the pots cracks and stacks can lean. Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts at the top of the stack.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
- Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Chipping Ongar Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- What the survey won’t cover
Tips that help
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Keep the report with your property records
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Keep a record of damp patches and dates
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. That helps you decide what to do first.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear of leaves and moss, ideally after the leaves have fallen. Use a gutter contractor rather than climbing a ladder yourself. Most overflow damage starts with a blocked gutter.
Greensted questions
Do you carry out roof surveys in Greensted?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Greensted is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Greensted?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
How long does the visit take?
On site, it typically takes between one and two hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Report times depend on the package.
Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?
No. Where we see something that needs a structural engineer, the report says so. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
Can I check my roof myself?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Roof by roof
Flat roof coverings
Some flat roofs have been coated over several times. We say what we can see and when a closer look would need opening up.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. We check for loose ridge tiles and missing mortar.
