Thermal imaging roof survey in Hill Green, Essex
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof in Hill Green, carried out by an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photographs.
- Cold areas below the roof
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Heat escaping through the roof
About our thermal roof survey in Hill Green
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey pitched roof slopes, ceilings below the roof and loft conversions, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Hill Green, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to.

Practical tips
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. It is your decision how to use it, whether that is asking for work or discussing the price.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when booking.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Drones, thermal imaging and Hill Green roofs
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The wider area around Hill Green has a long history of building, with Audley End House about 4.2 miles north-east. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Mary and St Clement, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Clavering Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

The survey, step by step
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Hill Green, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Tell us about parking before the day
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
How to book

Advice
Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
How the survey changes by roof type
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. We check those patches with moisture readings.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Hill Green, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
