Thermal imaging roof survey in Letchworth, Hertfordshire
Wondering about the roof at a property in Letchworth? We carry out thermal roof surveys in Letchworth and across Hertfordshire.
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
Why it’s worth a survey now in Letchworth
A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so you know where to put things right. Once water reaches the loft insulation in a home in Letchworth, it loses much of its value and is slow to dry. That is an extra cost on top of the roof work itself.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Thermal roof survey in Letchworth
What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We are often asked to look into moisture around outlets and upstands and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, across flat roofs, commercial roofs and insulated roof spaces.
In a town like Letchworth, the roofs that are hardest to see are often on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. Close-up drone photos and thermal images show what binoculars from the pavement cannot. Both depend on the weather on the day. Rear slopes over back additions are a common example, as they’re rarely visible from the street.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What we do, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. In Letchworth, parking is rarely complicated, though it’s useful to know about driveways or restrictions. We check the roof from the ground and from windows, then from the loft where there is safe access, and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Preparing for the visit
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property

Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Letchworth: your questions answered
Do you cover Letchworth?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Letchworth is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Is my home in Letchworth listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Can a thermal camera see water?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size.
Thermal roof surveys in Letchworth: local notes
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. With Hinxworth Place about 4.5 miles north, Letchworth sits in an area with a long building history. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Paul, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. If you look after a building like Hillshott Infant School and Nursery, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Letchworth is about 5 miles north of Stevenage, in Hertfordshire. Wherever you are in Letchworth, we can come and survey your property. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Letchworth and the places around it. Our Milton Keynes page covers surveys nearby.
All of SG6 is covered for thermal roof surveys. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Station Road, Willian Church Road and Rowland Way or a nearby road, we can help. Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
Insulation often gets moved during work in the loft. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.

How we price thermal roof surveys
Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:
- Roof area
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and the package you choose.
Booking your survey
There’s no need for technical words. Just let us know:
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Your timetable, like an exchange date
- The address and postcode of the property
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us a few details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
Checking the roof from ground level
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
