About our thermal roof survey in Monkey Street
A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. If you’ve noticed ceilings that feel colder in places and areas of a flat roof that may hold water, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and insulated roof spaces alike.
In a village or hamlet like Monkey Street, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Practical tips
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Photograph damp patches with the date
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
Questions from Monkey Street
Will you come out to Monkey Street?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is my home in Monkey Street listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Are you insured?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What else we do in Monkey Street
Why it’s worth a survey now in Monkey Street
Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Monkey Street, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
What you get with us

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
Drones, thermal imaging and Monkey Street roofs
Monkey Street is within about 5 miles of the coast. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
Whatever the street in Monkey Street, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

What we’re asked to look at in Monkey Street
Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, especially when it’s warm inside and cold outside.
People normally book a survey after spotting something like this:
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Questions to ask before booking
- What experience they bring
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Their report turnaround times
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.
What to let us know when you get in touch
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- What made you get in touch
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
To book a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. You’ll know the price before anything is booked.
What we do, step by step
We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Somewhere as small as Monkey Street, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route to the loft
