Nazeing Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof in Nazeing. More than 5,000 surveys completed across London and South East England.
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Cold areas below the roof
Practical tips
Small things make a difference. Some pointers:
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- File the images with your roof records
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
About our thermal roof survey in Nazeing
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. Common reasons to book are stains that keep coming back and water getting in at parapets and stacks, on pitched roof slopes, loft conversions and flat roofs.
Villages like Nazeing often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

What we cannot see
A survey is a close look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- An energy rating for the building
- The condition of timbers we cannot see
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections

Questions from Nazeing
Do you carry out roof surveys in Nazeing?
Yes, Nazeing is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in Nazeing is listed?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
What’s the best way to book?
It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and some details about the roof. We survey seven days a week.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Can a thermal camera see water?
No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
What happens on the day
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey normally takes about one to two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Around Nazeing, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
How to prepare
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice
What happens if roof problems are left?
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is frequently to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
When to book a survey in Nazeing
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are frequently invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Stains that keep coming back
- Water that travels before it shows
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Water Lane Primary Academy, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
Flying and imaging in Nazeing
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
