FAQs for Nounsley
How do I find out if my home in Nounsley is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Nounsley?
Yes. Nounsley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access as you book.
What will the report tell me?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.
How a thermal roof survey works in Nounsley
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera does not see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. If you’re worried about leaks that are hard to trace and stains that keep coming back, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Nounsley, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What we cannot see
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
- An energy rating for the building
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Thermal roof surveys in Nounsley: local notes
Nounsley lies within about 5 miles of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Danbury Place, about 4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Nounsley. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Anyone responsible for a site like Hatfield Peverel Infant School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt roofs frequently show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.
How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. In a hamlet or village like Nounsley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
When to book a survey in Nounsley
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when it’s warm inside and cold outside.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St Andrew, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Questions to ask before booking
- What the survey won’t cover
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
