About our thermal roof survey in Prestwood
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging frequently helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access. We survey ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and insulated roof spaces, and common reasons people get in touch are damp around roof outlets and upstands and thin or uneven insulation in the roof.
Around Prestwood, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you can’t see, like rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.
Flying and imaging in Prestwood
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Historic houses like Hughenden Manor, about 3.4 miles south, show how far back building around Prestwood goes. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. For an older house near a landmark such as Holy Trinity Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How it works
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Prestwood, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before the survey
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Related advice
Why get it checked now?
A damp patch that keeps coming back typically has a cause that hasn’t been found. Thermal imaging with moisture readings can help narrow it down, rather than more guesswork. With lower homes, common in places like Prestwood, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

What we are asked to look at in Prestwood
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Stains that keep coming back
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
If you look after a building like Prestwood Junior School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- What exactly goes into their report
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one

Prestwood: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Prestwood?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Is my home in Prestwood listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
How do I book a survey in Prestwood?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It’s part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?
A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
