Shooter's Hill questions

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Shooter's Hill?

It rarely stops a survey, but it’s worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Shooter's Hill?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Shooter's Hill is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Each address is checked against all of them before the drone goes up. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

How do I book a survey in Shooter's Hill?

To book, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

What do I do with the report?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Thermal roof survey in Shooter's Hill: what you get

We present each thermal image next to a normal photo of the same area, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If you’re worried about damp around chimneys and parapets and leaks far from where the stain appears, we can find out what’s behind it, on commercial roofs, ceilings below the roof and flat roofs alike.

London roofs sit shoulder to shoulder in terraces and blocks, which makes care around neighbours part of the job. We take care to focus on the roof we’ve been asked to look at, in Shooter's Hill as anywhere. Tell us about the building and access as you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What we are asked to look at in Shooter's Hill

After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped, given suitable conditions on the day.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Ceilings that feel colder in places
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Thin or uneven insulation in the roof

The streets around a church such as Christ Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

What a good roof survey covers

For landlords and managing agents

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Why it is worth a survey now in Shooter's Hill

Trapped water can harm decks, timbers and ceilings the longer it stays. Looking now, while the damage may still be limited, keeps more options open. A hidden valley or parapet gutter on a London house can hold water for weeks before anyone notices. When the stain finally shows, the damage underneath is often older than it looks.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How big the roof is
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Helping us price your survey

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Anything about access we should know
  • The address and postcode of the property

You can call us seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What happens on the day

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Surveys in Shooter's Hill can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

How to book

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

Thermal roof surveys around Shooter's Hill

Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. The flight restriction zone around London City Airport comes within about 1 mile of Shooter's Hill. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the exact boundary for the address before flying.

Eltham Palace lies about 1.7 miles south-west, so building around Shooter's Hill goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. For a London address like Shooter's Hill, it’s useful to know about controlled parking before the day, along with any off-street space.
